1997 DODGE VIPER GTS SRII /40000 €

History

The Dodge Viper was created at the initiative of Bob Lutz. To provide a historic bond and legitimize the Viper, the group will appeal to Carroll Shelby to soften the eyes of the public. The latter will even say that to build this type of car, you only need a powerful engine, and only think about the rest then.

The first prototype is tested in January 1989. It debuted in 1991 with two pre-production models like the Indianapolis 500 car when Dodge was forced to replace it in the Japan-built Dodge Stealth because of complaints from United Auto Workers, and went on sale in December 1991 as RT / 10 Roadster.

The first Viper (designed with the help of Lamborghini for the mechanical part) is marketed under the Dodge brand and quickly becomes a benchmark sports car in the US market. The model is particularly easy to recognize thanks to its unique and aggressive look and unusual engine. It is immediately a commercial success and a symbolic car for the Dodge brand, which is becoming known all over the world.

After years and several different models (Dodge Viper RT / 10, GTS, GTS-R, ACR, SRT-10, SRT-10 Coupé), the Dodge Viper remains a reference in the market of “muscular” cars (“muscle cars”). “) in North America.

The engine comes from the new V10 block for the Ram pick-up range, although the Viper block is made of aluminum, where the pickup blocks are made of cast iron. The latest version of this engine is a V10 developing 600  hp . Dodge has equipped its Ram, a model of pickup very sold in the United States, in its version SRT-10 (510  hp ).

Its gearbox makes it possible to reach in first gear the legal speed on American motorways, which is generally 55  mph (88  km / h ).

But the Dodge Viper created and developed by engineer Neil Heinneman has been especially successful on all the circuits of the World where it has achieved many successes, including the famous 24 Hours of Daytona in Florida. The first to have it run is a Frenchman, Michel Arnaud, who entered two copies at the 1994 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, entrusted to experienced and renowned drivers (René Arnoux – Justin Bell – Philippe Gache – Bertand Balas – François Migault). Both American cars were ranked second and third in their GT1 class. This feat gave ideas to the parent company in Detroit, Michigan, who decided to invest in developing a competition version. Subsequently, the prestigious Oreca team engaged them in competition and she obtained many successes.

The year 1996 was marked by the start of production of the second generation of the Viper, called SR II. The car was essentially an updated version of the first generation of the Viper, since most of its parts were passed on to this generation.

The RT / 10 has undergone minor changes, the most important being the exhaust positions. The exhaust from the car was moved back to release the return pressure, which increased power to 415 hp and torque to 662 Nm. A removable hardtop was now available with a glass window. sliding. Some components of the steel suspension were replaced by aluminum, resulting in a reduction of 27 kg.

A new Viper model was introduced in late 1996. Known as GTS, the car was essentially a more powerful version of the RT / 10. The roof of the car was designed so that pilots could adjust their helmet during the track days. This was called the double bubble and was used for all subsequent generations of the Viper after the SR II. More than 90% of the GTSs contained new parts compared to the RT / 10 despite similar looks, and the 8.0-liter V10 received an increase in power, the engine now producing a maximum power of 450 hp. The GTS was also the first Viper to receive airbags.

In 1997 and 1998, the Viper would continue to receive minor updates. The GTS would obtain second generation airbags, revised exhaust manifolds and a revised camshaft for 1997, while the RT / 10 increased power up to 450 hp by 1998.
